What is a Postcard?

To qualify for postcard pricing, your mailer must be at least 3 12″ high, 5″ long, and 0.007″ thick (about the thickness of an index card), but no more than 4 14″ high, 6″ long, or 0.016″ thick. Postcards can’t be folded if they want to be sent at the base rate.

Large postcards can be up to 6 18″ high, 11 12″ long, and 14″ thick, but they cost as much to send as a First-Class Letter ($0.57 and up).On the front of most business postcards, there is an image or a call to action. On the back, there is room for the address, postage, and maybe a short message.

Some common examples are reminders about appointments, announcements about sales or grand openings, and real estate listings. They are an easy and cheap way to let customers know about your products and services, and they are also a cheap way to send holiday cards.

Before July 1, 1898, privately printed postcards didn’t get a postage discount. Since then, postcard pricing have been the same as for USPS-stamped cards, except from April 15, 1925 through July 1, 1928. The Postal Service raised the price of stamped cards (formerly termed “postal cards”) by one penny on January 10, 1999. This included card paper and printing. The extra charge went from 2 cents in 2001 to 3 cents in 2008, 4 cents in 2013, and 5 cents in 2021. The Postal Service began offering collectible premium stamp cards in 1994.

Depending on where you want to send the postcard, the number of stamps you need will be different. You may need two, three, or even more, than three stamps, depending on where you are.

How Much Is A Postcard Stamp ?

The Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) looked at the new prices for postcard stamps and liked what they saw.
Prices for first-class mail forever stamps will not change because of the new prices. The price of a forever stamp for first-class mail will stay at 55 cents.

👉  Even so, the price of a single-piece letter goes up by 20 cents for every extra ounce. 👉  The price of 1-ounce metered mail has gone up by 51 cents. The price of a postcard stamp has gone up to 36 cents. 👉  The price for a single 1-ounce piece is still the same as it was before, which was one dollar.

Classes of Mail

There are different kinds of “Classes” of mail that you can send through the USPS. You may have heard of “First Class” mail, but there are a few other choices that may work better for you.

Each type of mail has its own benefits and rules. Here are a few basic things you should know to help you choose the best option for you.

First Class Mail

Most people have heard of the type of mail called “First Class.” When you put a letter with a stamp in your mailbox, you are using one kind of First Class Mail.

But you can also do this when you send out a mass mailing. Most important things about first-class mail are:

👉  Speed: Top of the Line The post office treats “First Class” mail as the most important mail, hence the name. Because of this, mail sent with this class gets to its destination very quickly, usually in 1–5 business days. 👉  Cost: Compared to the other types of mail, First Class is the most expensive. It costs between $0.40 and $1.16 to send something First Class. 👉  Quantity Requirements: First-Class Mail lets you send as few or as many items as you want without having to sort them first. But if you want “Presort” pricing, you have to mail at least 500 pieces.

Standard Mail (AKA Marketing Mail)

Standard Mail, which is also called “Marketing Mail,” is usually used for mass marketing because it costs less per piece than First Class Mail.

Standard Mail is less important to the post office than First Class mail because it costs less, so it takes longer to get there. You can save a lot of money by using this type of mail as long as you don’t have a hard deadline or an event coming up quickly.

👉  Speed: The USPS says that delivery times can be anywhere from 3 to 21 days. 👉  Cost: First Class Mail is a lot more expensive than Standard Mail. 👉  Quantity Requirements: All Standard mail pieces must be presorted, which is explained in more detail below, and the minimum number is 200.

Options for nonprofits: If you are a nonprofit (and the IRS has confirmed this), you can mail using special Nonprofit Standard rates, which are much cheaper than the regular prices.

Presorted Mail Versus Non-Presorted Mail

Even though “Presort” is not a mailing class in and of itself, there is a “Presort” rate for both First Class and Standard Mail. “Presorting” means that you or your print and direct mail provider (or mail house) will organize your mail by destination ZIP codes to make it easier for the Postal Service to deliver it.

“All of the pieces that are going to the same place are put into the same bundle or tray,” says the USPS. You’ll start by sorting by specific areas and then move up to more general ones. All the mail that was left over is put together.”

To make it worth it to presort your mail, you do need to send enough mail. The minimum amount for First Class Presort is 500, and the minimum amount for Standard Presort is 200.

By doing all the sorting for them, you get a lower postage price per piece from the USPS, which can save you hundreds of dollars. All you have to do is put your postcards and letters in postage boxes before sending them.

In general, a person or small business won’t be able to sort their own mail because they need special software and a permit from the USPS.

So, the best way to use a presorted mailing is to work with a mail house or a full-service print and mailing company like Conquest Graphics. Plus, they take care of everything for you while you still get the benefits.

Postcard Stamp Size

You can mail postcards in a number of different sizes, but the size you choose will directly affect which classes of mail you can use. From 4″x6″ all the way up to 6″x11″, these are the most common sizes. It’s also important to remember that postcards come in two sizes: standard and oversized (or jumbo.)

The standard sizes for postcards are 4″x6″, 4.25″x6″, and 5″x7″, and the cost to mail them is usually around $0.40.Oversized postcards come in sizes like 5.5″x8.5″, 6″x9″, 6.25″x9″, and 6″x11″, and they cost about $0.55 to mail.

Start with postcards that are 4″x6″, 4.25″x6″, or 5″x7″. And if you are sending 500 or more of these smaller pieces, you can take advantage of a special First Class “Card” rate.

If you mail postcards that are slightly bigger than the standard size, say between 5.5″x8.5″ and 6″x11″, the USPS will treat them as letters and charge you a couple of cents more than for standard postcards.

If you mail postcards that are 6.25″x9″ or 6″x11″, they are big enough to qualify for what the USPS calls “Every Door Direct Mail” (or EDDM.)

With EDDM, you no longer need a list of names and addresses to send your postcards to. This is a very different way to reach your audience.

Mailing routes are used instead. When you choose the EDDM options, you are taken to a mapping tool that lets you choose the routes you want to mail to. From there, the USPS will deliver one of your postcards to each mailbox along their route.

The mapping tool lets you compare the different routes based on useful demographic data, such as the average size and income of a household.

You can also use this tool to target very specific neighbourhoods and make sure that everyone within a 5-mile radius knows about your marketing message.

When you choose a larger postcard size, you open up a whole new set of marketing options that can save you money. If you meet the minimum quantity for First-Class presort mailing, you can also save on postage costs.

Postcard Quantities

When it comes to the prices and quantities of postcard postage, it can be hard to see how much you could save on postage by just ordering a few more postcards to mail.

There is a minimum of 500 postcards for First Class Presort mailing options and 200 postcards for Standard mailing options.

If you don’t have at least the minimum number of pieces in your order, we suggest adding a few more to get to the minimum so you can save a lot on postage per piece.

we suggest checking to see if you qualify for Postcard Commingling so that you can still get bulk mail discounts even if you don’t meet the minimum for First Class Presort or Standard mailing.

First-Class Non-Presort is the only mailing option you should see for all postcard sizes and quantities (except for EDDM-sized postcards).

This option is always available, no matter how much you want to send, even though it costs more because the postal workers will sort by ZIP code for you.

Where To Put A Stamp On A Postcard?

Many people didn’t know where on the postcard to put the stamp. Just carefully put your stamps in the top right corner of the envelope you want to send.

On postcards, put the stamp where it says to near the delivery address.

If the letter is bigger and heavier than usual, or if your postcard is square and big, or if you want some extra services, you will have to pay more to get what you want.

Commingled Postcards

Postcard Commingling is also not a type of mail, but a service that some print and direct mail companies offer. It takes advantage of Standard Presort postage rates, but you can send as few or as many mail pieces as you want.

It works by sending your mailings with mailings from other companies. For example, if you have 20 postcards and another company has 180, you can both use Standard Presort rates even though you don’t have the minimum number of postcards needed.

👉  Speed: Most commingled postcards use Standard Presort Mail, which can take anywhere from 1 to 15 business days to get to their destination. Cost – Postage rates are equivalent to Standard Presort Mail.

👉  Quantity: There is no minimum number of commingled postcards that you have to buy. You can commingle mail as long as you have at least one 6″x9″ postcard that needs to be sent.
