How much is a 1st class stamp?
👉 1st Class mail is the fastest and most expensive way to send a letter. It usually takes one to two working days for the letter to arrive.
From April 4, a first-class stamp for a standard letter, which can weigh up to 100g and be no bigger than 24cm x 16.5cm x 5mm, will cost 95p instead of 90p.
At a Post Office counter, you can buy a single first-class stamp by itself. If not, you can usually buy them in groups of several stamps. For example, a set of eight books from Royal Mail costs £7.60.
Buying a book of stamps used to be a good way to save money, but now it costs the same as buying each stamp separately.
Still, you don’t have to waste time and energy going back and forth to the Post Office. If you want to send something first class that is larger than a standard letter, the stamp will cost more.
What can I send with a 1st Class Stamp?
Sending a large letter with a first-class stamp will cost more than sending a standard letter. As of April 2022, a large letter will cost £1.45 in first-class stamps.
For £5.80, you can buy a book of four large stamps, which is still £1.45 per stamp. Royal Mail says that a large letter can be 35.3cm x 25cm x 2.5cm, but it still can’t weigh more than 750g.

You can pay for these heavier stamps at the Post Office either at the self-service machines or at the customer service desks.
A first-class stamp can also be used to send small and medium-sized packages, but the price will be higher if the package is heavy.
👉 Royal Mail says that a small package is 45 cm long, 35 cm wide, and 16 cm thick.
- The stamp will cost £4.45 if it weighs up to 2kg.
- For a package to be called “medium,” it can’t be bigger than 61 cm by 46 cm by 46 cm.

The price of a 1st Class stamp will go up by 10p to 95p on April 4, 2022, and the price of a 2nd Class stamp will go up by 2p to 68p.
That’s a huge increase in the price of a 1st Class stamp, and it seems like a clear sign that they’d rather you use a 2nd Class stamp or not send any letters at all… They see their future in parcels. In fact,
Royal Mail says that they have carefully thought about these price changes because of the long-term structural decline in letter use and the rise in inflation.
Since 2004 and 2005, when the number of letters was at its highest, it has dropped by more than 60%. Since the start of the pandemic, it has dropped by about 20%.
Overall, these changes are about the same as inflation and are needed to keep the one price goes anywhere Universal Service going. The Universal Service Obligation (USO) says that Royal Mail has to deliver letters to 31 million homes and businesses in the UK six days a week at the same price.

What we really want to know is, if a stamp is going to cost 50% more than it did 10 years ago (in 2012, the price of a 1st Class stamp went up to 60p), will the service match the price?
In their most recent Quality of Service report, only 76.8% of 1st Class mail was delivered on time, even though their goal was 93%.
Royal Mail says that compared to other postal services in Europe, their stamp prices are still among the best. Their research shows that the average price for a 1st Class letter (0-100g) in Europe is £1.36.

Do Stamps Have An Expiry Date?
Stamps that don’t say how much money they are worth don’t usually expire, but next year there will be a big change that will make the stamps we have now useless.
From January 31, 2023, you will no longer be able to use stamps with a picture of the Queen’s head.
Instead, you can only use the new stamps with their new barcodes, and you’ll have to pay extra if you try to use anything else.
But MoneySavingExpert said that the post office has made a partial U-turn and that old Christmas stamps will still work after that date.
How are Postage prices decided?
Stamp prices are usually raised once a year by the Royal Mail. This year, the price went up in April. Most of the time, it gives customers about a month’s notice before raising prices.
The increase was announced in March of this year. The number of people sending letters is going down, so Royal Mail said it will raise the price of postage.
Since 2005, 60% fewer letters are being sent, and since the start of the pandemic, around 20% fewer letters have been sent. It also said that rising inflation was to blame for the rise.
Brits are having trouble making ends meet because the prices of food and energy bills are going up. Royal Mail said it had to do this to meet its obligation to provide Universal Service.
That means that the post office has to deliver mail to 31 million homes and businesses six days a week at a single price.
